Utilities

Grid operators and utilities — manage lighting infrastructure efficiently.

Energy and electricity utilities operate street lighting and grid infrastructure over decades. We supply maintainable, standard-compliant installations, reliable spare-parts supply from Swiss in-house production and control systems that integrate seamlessly into existing networks.

03.1

Grid & street lighting

Standard-compliant design to SN/EN 13201, energy-efficient LED installations and dynamic dimming via esave or Cititouch. Up to 90% energy savings compared with old installations — with better light quality.

03.2

Control & remote operation

Radio-based lighting controls with astronomical switching, traffic-dependent dimming and fault reporting per light point. Integrable into existing management systems — proven in numerous Swiss municipalities and utilities.

03.3

Spare parts & life cycle

Spare parts from Swiss in-house production, available even years later. We think in terms of life-cycle costs rather than purchase prices and keep your lighting infrastructure operational in the long term.

How we work with utilities

A utility operates its lighting infrastructure for decades. We therefore plan the installation as a whole, with data your organisation can keep using and with components that can be replaced individually.

  1. Inventory and database

At the start we record every light point with its mast, luminaire and control, including inspection of masts and lighting columns. We bring the data together in an information database that your team can continue to use for maintenance and renewal planning.

  2. Variants over the service life

For each lighting class we calculate variants to SN EN 13201 and compare energy, maintenance and spare parts over the service life. Payback calculations show when a renewal pays off.

  3. Controls and interfaces

We determine where dynamic dimming makes sense and plan manufacturer-independent lighting controls with open interfaces. This allows luminaire, sensor module and software to be replaced or extended individually later on.

  4. Tender

Where you go to public tender, we write the bill of quantities and specifications by function, with brand names only with the addition “or equivalent”. This allows life-cycle costs to be assessed alongside price as an award criterion.

  5. Delivery in stages

We supply luminaires, masts and control components according to your construction programme, including over several stages. After installation come integration into the control system, the dimming profiles and a measurement to the guidelines of the Swiss Lighting Society (SLG).

  6. Operation and maintenance

We adapt dimming profiles when use or requirements change, and spare parts come from our own production. Periodic lighting measurements, technology updates and warranty extensions can be covered in a maintenance contract on request.

03.5

Standards and requirements

We design traffic areas to SN EN 13201, supplemented in Switzerland by the SLG 202 guideline of the Swiss Lighting Society. The recommendations of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) on avoiding light emissions are: light only as brightly as necessary, control according to demand and reduce at times. We therefore define dimming profiles during design, not at commissioning.

For connected installations, open standards belong in the tender: Zhaga Book 18 with D4i between luminaire and module, TALQ between management software and field devices. Anyone using sensors should clarify data protection first, and our article on Smart City fundamentals shows what matters. SN EN 12464-1 applies in workshop halls, warehouses and offices, and our overview of EN 12464-1 covers the 2021 edition.

Funding: streets no, sports grounds yes

Public street lighting is excluded from ProKilowatt, as is the lighting of parks and pedestrian zones. Lightbankplus does not fund street lighting either. Sports grounds and stadiums remain eligible, as do outdoor workplaces under EN 12464-2 such as car parks or storage areas, and indoor lighting whose energy demand is below the ProKilowatt maximum value. For workshop halls and outdoor facilities of the utility itself, an application can therefore be worthwhile.

One condition affects utilities directly: other funding, for example from the canton, municipality or electricity utility, may not be combined with ProKilowatt. A utility that runs its own funding programme should clarify this before committing funds to a project. If the grant would fall below the ProKilowatt threshold of CHF 20,000, Lightbankplus is an option, until the end of 2027 and with up to 30% or CHF 30,000 per project. The ProKilowatt funding rules are set out in detail in our article.

Revitalisation of Richterswil Village Centre

Because several houses in the village centre are listed, we fixed the span wires and anchor points one by one together with the municipality and the Elektrizitätswerke des Kantons Zürich. Temporary solar lighting bridged open stages. Today the 22 custom luminaires are controlled centrally via esave.

For Axpo and Stammkraft, the deadline mattered: there was one month from the first draft to installation, and the exhibition in the tunnel at the Limmerensee power plant was lit in time for the opening event. A lighting calculation beforehand ensured uniformity and illuminance on the banners, and we chose the variant together with the client.
